Fourth of July Weekend Fun

I had a wonderful weekend y’all – glory to God! Seriously with all the busy-ness and just life in general, I thank God for continuously blessing me, and taking me through the good and not-so-good. This weekend was part of the good – I got to relax and just be. This post will be split in two parts just like last time because there would be too many pictures otherwise. So here’s what I did – nothing too fancy but it was fun.

July 4th

I slept, played with the dog and ate a few more of these:

20130706_WeekendRoundup720_005Rambutan - I bought them on my last trip to 99 Ranch Market – the Asian grocery store. They looked interesting so I bought a few. I didn’t know how to pick them so I watched the person next to me but I guess I looked a bit lost because the lady said something ( don’t remember what). But she told me how to choose – make sure they are firm, free of mold, colour doesn’t matter. She also showed me how to eat one – crack the “hairy” exterior with your nails and then eat the soft, fleshy bit inside. Click on the link for more info. They are sweet but not too sweet – I liked them a lot.

Then I hung out with one of my girls from college. I’ve know her for like ten years at this point – crazy. She was on holiday from NorCal. We went to the Nigerian restaurant, Veronica’s Kitchen, in Inglewood because her friend recommended it. The food was good but the whole experience is a story for another day – let’s just say we were CRACKING UP!! Afterwards, we went to Santa Monica for a bit. We missed the fireworks but Converse had a great flag of shoes in their display. Cool.

July 5th

I went in to work which was fine. When I got home I was tired and dozing but my friend was having a barbecue so I got it together and went. She’s very sweet so I knew it would be fun even if I only lasted an hour but I lasted two or three.

As in…how about I met John Salley? NBA Player and GaTech alum. I lived in GA – we knew this info as a matter of course. He was really cool and laid back and has a nice family. They are all vegan – I found that interesting. He talks more about it on his website I think. I was all cool and stuff but I eventually asked for a picture – so I could remember that yes o I met him PLUS one of my besties is a basketball fan. I seriously debated about putting this up since I’m not trying to pretend I’m famous, but it was pretty cool.

Famzing with John Salley

He liked my shoes, and so did a few of the other guests :) – the ones my mom thinks are men’s shoes, the oxfords I love. These ones:

July 6th

I got to do one of my favourite things – hang out with Bekah. Between work and class, my schedule has been a bit full so we decided to get together in the morning and spend time together until I had to head out to class. I slept at 3:30am that morning y’all – why????? Yes I know why – I was finishing homework so that I wouldn’t wake up and try to say I would do it then knowing I had a morning appointment. So yes I was a bit tired  but joyfully Bekah had to move our meet time by 30 minutes – hallelujah. I got good sleep, spent time with God and then hit the road.

Bekah lives close to a bunch of great shops and restaurants so we spent all our time in the area doing fun stuff and generally catching up. Me – I live in a great area but it’s not as active in terms of cool cafes, shops, etc without a bit of driving. Things are mores spread out.

10:45am – Breakfast at Doughboys

Bekah switched things up and we went to DOughboys instead of Joan’s. We got two dishes and split them which was perfect so I got to try different items. First was French Toast with Toasted Almond syrup and strawberries. The second was a breakfast quesadilla. I forgot the name but both dishes were good. I’ll definitely go back.  Bekah always finds the good food places

12:10pm – Mood LA

I finally made it to Mood Fabrics!!!!

20130706_WeekendRoundup720_017

I was good and didn’t buy anything because I didn’t need anything but muslin and twill tape which they did NOT have. As one of the staff put it, they have all the decadent fabrics but not so much the staples. Boy was she ever right – $60-80/yd for some fabrics – I know they have some that cost way more and some as low as $15/yd. I’ll go back when I have depleted enough of my stash to permit a purchase.

This place is HUGE!!!! Rows and rows about six/seven tall of all types of fashion fabric, trims, buttons and home fabrics. I was so distracted by all the fabric – just wonderful. If you are looking for something really special, this is your place! Bekah looked at suiting fabrics and I looked at her crazy – I love a good suit but I need bright colours. Like I said before, she has a classic sense of style with a twist and a good shoe game. Meanwhile I was all in the lace and silk.

(I know the trend is “over” but I want some cowgirl boots like Bekah’s. Stylish and trendy are not mutually exclusive)

And as we were leaving, we say this little guy.20130706_WeekendRoundup720_032He was super tiny to me – I’m used to my 50lb dog so I petted him gently and took a few pictures. He did not want to be picked up though and scooted away if we tried. I don’t blame him – everyone probably tries to pick him up.

Have an amazing, blessed Friday
